These days, most buyers of improved properties such as homes are using the services of professional home inspectors.

The job of a home inspector is to visually examine the property to discover any apparent defects which could negatively affect the owner or buyer.

  

Although there are no mandated official standards, typically inspectors are professionally trained and belong to trade organizations such as the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors or the American Society of Home Incpectors. Some are also licenced General Contractors. Most home inspectors are generalists and will recommend further inspections by specialists when they discover issues outside their field of expertise (such as plumber, roofer, electrician, structural engineer).

The adage "an ounce of prevention..." certainly applies here. The nominal cost associated with having a proper home inspection can save you enormous costs later.
